Washington`s Alex Ovechkin, already a hockey legend with a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, multiple Hart Trophies, and the record for most NHL goals, reached another career first on Monday night.
For the first time in his impressive career, Ovechkin scored a playoff overtime goal.
He achieved this milestone 2:26 into overtime against the Montreal Canadiens. This goal was his second of the game, his 74th career playoff goal, but remarkably his first in 45 playoff games that went into overtime.
Dylan Strome, Ovechkin`s teammate, commented on the achievement, noting Ovechkin`s consistent high performance and the excellent assist that led to the goal.
Ovechkin himself modestly described it simply as “a goal,” but this game-winning goal highlighted a classic performance from the veteran player. At 39 years old, Ovechkin also led the Capitals with seven hits and scored a power-play goal earlier in the game.
Coach Spencer Carbery praised Ovechkin`s impactful plays, physical presence, and leadership, emphasizing his role in driving the team forward.
