Alex Ovechkin Nets Goal No. 892 in Signature Style

RALEIGH, N.C. — Alex Ovechkin continued his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky`s NHL scoring record, netting his 892nd career goal in the Washington Capitals` 5-1 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

Ovechkin is now just two goals away from tying Gretzky`s record and three from surpassing it. The 39-year-old expressed disappointment with his team`s loss and his inability to score again.

He had a close-range shot denied by Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen early in the second period when the Capitals were down 3-0.

“We had a good opportunity at the start of the second period with a breakaway,” Ovechkin commented. “In games like this, you must capitalize on your chances, and I believe both goalies played exceptionally well tonight.”
