Anthony Duclair is taking a break to consider his situation with the New York Islanders after a challenging few days.

Coach Patrick Roy informed reporters that the team is granting the 29-year-old the time he needs. This decision came after Duclair requested space for reflection during a conversation on Thursday morning, according to reports from NHL.com`s Stefen Rosner.

The duration of Duclair`s absence remains uncertain, and it is not clear if he will return before the end of the regular season.

Roy described his recent discussion with Duclair, who was absent from Thursday`s Islanders practice, as “positive.”

This leave follows Roy`s public criticism of the winger after a 4-1 defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“He was terrible. Absolutely terrible. He had a very poor game,” Roy stated. “That`s why his ice time was limited. He`s fortunate to even be playing. I apologize for my strong words, but that`s my honest opinion.”

Roy further explained that he perceived a lack of effort from Duclair and questioned his level of competitiveness.

“He isn`t skating effectively, not competing hard enough, and not moving his feet. His performance is below our expectations.”

Duclair only played for four shifts in the third period of Tuesday`s game.

He is currently in the first year of a four-year, $14 million contract, which includes a full no-move clause until 2026. So far, he has recorded seven goals and four assists in 44 games.
