What Happened?
Veteran defender Ashley Young, who earned 39 caps for England, is currently a free agent after his contract with Everton expired. As his 40th birthday approaches on July 9, the experienced and versatile player is considering his next career move.
The Bigger Picture
Retiring doesn`t seem likely for Young, given he remains fit and capable, having featured in 36 games for Everton last season. Originally a dynamic winger, he has successfully transitioned into a full-back role, utilizing his extensive experience in defense.
Did You Know?
Following three consecutive promotions, Wrexham has publicly stated their ambition to recruit players with experience from top leagues. Young might be inclined to remain in the North West of England and join Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney`s club in North Wales, potentially choosing this over a move to Scottish giants Celtic.
What Jansen Said
According to former Wrexham forward Matt Jansen, Young faces a significant decision. Jansen noted, “Celtic is a huge club with Champions League football. Having played for Everton recently, Wrexham is very close, so he might likely choose Wrexham at 39. Or does he desire another chance in the Champions League? It`s a tough choice. Would he relocate to Scotland when he`s been living near Merseyside, close to Wrexham? That proximity might be more appealing. However, Celtic is a major club with Champions League football, so who knows, it`s really a fifty-fifty situation.”
Tell Me More
Jansen also commented on speculation linking another Premier League winner, Leicester icon Jamie Vardy (38), with Wrexham. Vardy is rumoured to be considering a move back to the Championship. Jansen remarked, “Paul Mullin succeeded in League Two despite injuries affecting his time in League One. Vardy netted nine goals in the Premier League last season, ten overall, and remains quite fit and sharp. The Championship schedule is demanding, match after match. Would he be used occasionally? I don`t think so. I`m confident he`d contribute many goals and valuable experience. I believe he`d be a great signing. It might be expensive, but it would be a beneficial addition.”
What Next for Wrexham?
The Hollywood co-owners at SToK Racecourse are providing funds for transfers, adding more intriguing storylines for the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, which is set to return for its fifth season in 2026.
