Unlike typical unrestricted free agents approaching the open market, John Tavares has somewhat less negotiating power. While players in such positions usually hold significant leverage, Tavares has been transparent about his strong desire to remain a Toronto Maple Leaf for the remainder of his career. This indicates the 34-year-old is currently not taking a rigid stance in discussions with his current team.
From the Maple Leafs` perspective, General Manager Brad Treliving expressed considerable support for Tavares during his recent year-end press conference. However, Treliving also stated that the team`s off-season planning was not yet finalized to the point where they could guarantee a new contract offer for either Tavares or Mitch Marner before the July 1st deadline.
Even if Marner`s future with the team is uncertain, it`s highly probable that Toronto and Tavares will engage in serious contract negotiations. Should Tavares`s representatives wish to add pressure during these talks, their most compelling argument could be the potential for a significant drop-off in performance at the second-line center position next season if Tavares is not re-signed. The alternative options available on the market might not offer the same level of contribution.
