The Boston Bruins have secured a contract extension for promising young blueliner Mason Lohrei before he could become a restricted free agent.
The team announced Monday they have reached an agreement with defenseman Mason Lohrei on a two-year extension valued at $6.4 million.
Lohrei`s two-year entry-level contract was set to expire on July 1, which would have made him a restricted free agent.
The 24-year-old had a season with mixed results in his first full year with the Bruins, recording career highs with five goals and 28 assists over 77 games. He finished second on the team in power-play points with 16 and led all Boston defensemen in assists, points, and power-play points.
However, the six-foot-five defenseman concluded the season with the NHL`s worst plus-minus rating at -43.
Lohrei, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was originally drafted by the Bruins 58th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft after playing college hockey at Ohio State University.
