Mattias Ekholm, Edmonton Oilers
Zach Hyman`s resolute declaration that the Edmonton Oilers would return after their Game 7 Stanley Cup Final defeat was compelling. His confidence stemmed from Edmonton`s deep playoff journey and near-miraculous comeback, supported by world-class players and a strong supporting cast.
However, the Oilers have faced numerous setbacks since. Losing Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg to offer sheets, unsuccessful free-agent acquisitions like Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, and Evander Kane`s season-long injury contributed to a poor start, with five losses in their first seven games. Inconsistent goaltending from Stuart Skinner and injuries to Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid further hampered their season, diminishing hopes for home-ice advantage.
The most significant blow might be the injury to Mattias Ekholm, occurring before their anticipated first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings. Ekholm`s importance to the Oilers` defense cannot be overstated. His veteran presence has stabilized Edmonton`s blue line since his arrival, providing a crucial element previously lacking. He plays over 22 minutes per game, including more than two minutes on the penalty kill.
Ekholm`s absence is a major setback. Sportsnet Stats indicate that with Ekholm on the ice, the Oilers have a significant scoring chance advantage (plus-147 ratio), whereas without him, this advantage drastically reduces (plus-43 ratio). The Oilers concede significantly more slot shots against when Ekholm is off the ice.
These statistics are particularly concerning given Skinner`s inconsistent performance and Darnell Nurse`s past playoff struggles. Without Ekholm, Nurse and Jake Walman will face increased pressure. While Walman is a valuable addition, his offensive style may not fully compensate for Ekholm`s defensive capabilities.
Evan Bouchard, Ekholm`s frequent defensive partner, will also be heavily affected. Their pairing has yielded strong scoring chance metrics, but Bouchard`s performance declines noticeably without Ekholm. His expected goals percentage drops significantly when playing apart from Ekholm.
Bouchard`s offensive talent is evident, but his defensive vulnerabilities are sometimes exposed. Ekholm provides crucial stability to Bouchard’s game. With Ekholm injured, the Oilers must prepare for potential defensive lapses and increased scoring opportunities for opponents.
Even prior to Ekholm’s injury, the momentum seemed to be shifting towards the Kings. Los Angeles, with their depth, home record, structured play, and reliable goaltending, now appear well-positioned against the Oilers. Ekholm`s absence further intensifies the challenge for Edmonton.
Amidst a turbulent season, the Oilers now face the daunting task of navigating the playoffs without their most dependable defensive player.
