UFC commentator and former double champion Daniel Cormier offered his perspective on a potential future bout between current heavyweight champion Jon Jones and interim champion Tom Aspinall.
According to Cormier, the significant age gap is a key factor. “Jon is 38 years old now, and he is looking at a 30-year-old guy who is bigger, younger, and fresher,” Cormier observed. He drew a comparison to the career trajectory of Stipe Miocic, noting how Jones is now facing the reality of younger, top-tier competition.
While Cormier believes Jones isn`t necessarily scared, he suggests the circumstances are sufficient to introduce doubt. The primary concern for Jones, in Cormier`s view, might not be just losing, but the manner of defeat. “You know what I think might worry him? In a fight with Aspinall, he could get knocked out. He could end up unconscious on his back,” Cormier speculated. He questioned whether Jones would want to experience such a public defeat: “I don’t know if he wants to present himself to the world in that way.”
