A new candidate has reportedly surfaced in the Vancouver Canucks` ongoing search for a head coach.
Marco Sturm, who currently serves as the head coach for the Los Angeles Kings` American Hockey League affiliate, could potentially be a contender for the role.
Irfaan Gaffar was the first to report that the Canucks had engaged in discussions with Sturm.
Speaking on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Sportsnet`s Elliotte Friedman explained why Sturm is an intriguing possibility. “Here`s the reason I think that`s an interesting name. No. 1, he wants to make the jump,” Friedman noted. “He`s very interested in making the jump from the AHL to the NHL.”
Friedman added, “Secondly, he fits the profile of a guy who would be very happy to be the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks. A guy who may not be on the top of any list, but a guy who`s ambitious, a guy who understands players, a guy who has respect. People respect Sturm. He`s got a good reputation.”
Sturm, 46 years old, has coached the AHL`s Ontario Reign for the past three seasons. Prior to that, he spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings.
Notably, Sturm also led the German men`s national hockey team to a silver medal finish at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
During his playing career, Sturm played 938 NHL games, accumulating 438 points with various teams including the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Kings, Canucks (for a brief six-game stint), Washington Capitals, and Florida Panthers.
Friedman speculated that Sturm might also be a name on the Boston Bruins` list as they too are currently searching for a new head coach.
The head coaching position in Vancouver became available last month after Rick Tocchet decided not to return to the team.
