This week in WTA 125 tournaments, the number one seeded players were victorious in singles competitions.
At the WTA 125 Puerto Vallarta Open in Mexico, Jaqueline Cristian from Romania, the top seed, won the title. She defeated Linda Fruhvirtova from the Czech Republic in the final in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Despite winning in two sets, Cristian needed over two hours to overcome the 19-year-old Fruhvirtova. Fruhvirtova had recently reached the third round of the Miami Open as a qualifier.
Cristian, aged 26 and ranked No. 72 in the world, had also reached the third round at Indian Wells earlier in the month. She has been in strong form, winning eight of her last ten matches, and is set to reach a career-high ranking of No. 57.
Cristian faced a tough semifinal match, needing a final-set tiebreak to defeat Rebeka Masarova. However, she progressed through the week to win her first WTA 125 singles title.
The Puerto Vallarta Open doubles title was won by Americans Hanna Chang and Christina McHale. They defeated Maya Joint and Ena Shibahara in a close final, 2-6, 6-2, [10-7]. McHale, a former Top 25 player, has recently returned to professional tennis after a two-year break.
In Turkey, Olga Danilovic of Serbia, the top seed, won the singles title at the Megasaray Hotels Open in Antalya. She defeated Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva of Andorra in the final on clay courts, 6-2, 6-3.
Danilovic, 24 years old, is expected to achieve a new career-high ranking of No. 35 after her dominant performance in Antalya. This is the second of three WTA 125 events being held in Antalya over three weeks.
Throughout the tournament, Danilovic consistently won her sets decisively, culminating in a 94-minute victory in the final. This is her second WTA 125 singles title, matching her two WTA 250 singles titles.
The Antalya doubles title was won by Maria Lourdes Carle of Argentina and Simona Waltert of Switzerland. They defeated Maja Chwalinska and Anastasia Detiuc in the final, 3-6, 7-5, [10-3]. Chwalinska and Detiuc were the previous week`s doubles champions in Antalya.
