David Savard is aware that his NHL journey is nearing its conclusion.
With the Montreal Canadiens participating in the playoffs, the exact moment he will retire his skates remains uncertain.
The seasoned defenseman disclosed on Friday his plans to retire after Montreal`s playoff campaign, marking a fitting end to his career after three seasons away from the postseason with his cherished childhood team.
“I am simply thrilled to be in Montreal and finally reach the playoffs,” he stated, as the Canadiens geared up for their first-round series against the Capitals, commencing Monday in Washington. “It`s truly special to achieve this in Montreal, in front of family and friends.”
“Growing up as a fan, having the opportunity to wear the jersey during a playoff run is incredibly meaningful.”
Savard, 34, originally from Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, joined Montreal as a free agent in July 2021. Prior to this, he contributed to the Tampa Bay Lightning`s Stanley Cup victory against the Canadiens in five games. His four-year, $14 million contract is set to expire at the conclusion of this season.
Savard became part of a Canadiens team that had just come off a Stanley Cup Final appearance. However, the team quickly transitioned into a rebuilding phase after a dismal start to the 2021-22 season, which led to significant organizational changes.
During warm-ups against the Carolina Hurricanes, in what could have been his final home game on Wednesday, Savard`s wife and children were present on Montreal`s bench.
However, Montreal secured a 4-2 victory in their regular-season finale, clinching a playoff berth and extending Savard`s career.
“We are playing for a great deal, and naturally, we aim to prolong his career,” mentioned captain Nick Suzuki. “It was heartwarming to share that moment with him, knowing it wouldn`t be his last game.”
“He is highly respected within the team, and he has played a significant role in this rebuild, serving as an example for many players.”
The Canadiens are set to begin their first-round series against the top-seeded Washington Capitals on Monday at 7 p.m. ET.
