The playoff series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers continued to deliver intense moments in Game 2.
During the second period of Wednesday`s game, Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues was hit from behind by Maple Leafs forward Scott Laughton, causing Rodrigues to go face-first into the boards.
Laughton was assessed a four-minute penalty for roughing on the play. However, Rodrigues also received a two-minute minor penalty for embellishment.
Rodrigues briefly left the ice, seemingly injured from the hit, but returned to the game shortly thereafter.
Following the game, Panthers head coach Paul Maurice mentioned that he did not receive an explanation from the referees regarding the embellishment call.
According to NHL Rule 64.1, embellishment is defined as “any player who blatantly dives, embellishes a fall or reaction or who feigns an injury.”
While the officials apparently felt Rodrigues` actions met this definition, fans watching the game widely disagreed with the penalty call online, expressing their disbelief.
