In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Auston Matthews was present at the arena but was the only player from the Toronto Maple Leafs roster not participating in Sunday`s morning skate.
This marks the second time the prominent center has missed a practice session during the playoffs, following a similar absence in the first round. It is widely speculated that he is managing an unrevealed upper-body injury.
Matthews, a forward celebrated for scoring 60 goals twice in his career, recorded a personal low of 33 goals this regular season and has only netted two goals in the nine playoff games played so far.
Veteran defenseman Chris Tanev commented on Matthews` importance despite the dip in scoring. “He’s our captain, our leader, and he`s been a fantastic player for our team,” Tanev stated. “I fully expect him to perform like himself tonight. He will be ready and make a big difference for us.”
Matthews is being heavily relied upon in this series against the physically imposing Florida Panthers. He is averaging 23 minutes and 12 seconds of ice time and has been highly effective in the faceoff circle, winning 57 percent of draws. While he has contributed three assists, his primary offensive threat – goal scoring – has been notably absent.
Or, at a minimum, it appears to be hindered.
