The saying “pressure makes diamonds” holds true, especially for NHL general managers. Their period of highest pressure runs from their team`s elimination until the end of the off-season. During this crucial time, all 31 GMs are working to build a Stanley Cup-winning team. For some, the focus is on future success, while others are under immediate pressure to win and are urgently seeking the right pieces.
This summer, several NHL teams and their GMs are facing significant pressure, whether they aim for immediate results or are building for the long haul.
Chicago Blackhawks
It`s surprising that the Chicago Blackhawks aren`t mentioned more often regarding the off-season pressure they face. General Manager Kyle Davidson took over in October 2021 with the mandate to dismantle the core of the dynasty era, which included stars like Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.
Progress has been slow so far. Davidson parted ways with Kane and Toews during the 2022-23 season, fully committing to a rebuild. However, other decisions have contributed to the team`s current situation. Davidson traded promising young players like Brandon Hagel and Alex DeBrincat and didn`t extend a qualifying offer worth $3.6 million to Dylan Strome, allowing him to leave as a UFA for no compensation.
Arguably, the most positive event for Davidson and the Blackhawks was winning the 2023 draft lottery, moving up from third to first place and securing the opportunity to draft a potentially franchise-changing talent in Connor Bedard.
The Blackhawks` slow progress in advancing the rebuild isn`t due to a lack of effort. It`s known that Davidson pursued player Jake Guentzel but was unsuccessful, losing out to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Davidson commented on this, stating, “Look, we’re always open to exploring these things, but it’s got to be right. It’s got to make sense. We can’t do something that’s going to be counter to the path that we’ve set out on. If there is a big move that presents itself, that makes sense, then I’m all for exploring that and pursuing something that does make sense.”
While the Blackhawks continue to develop their drafted prospects, it`s now crucial for them to acquire a significant impact player. With substantial cap space ($29.2 million) available and Connor Bedard in clear need of an established linemate, the pressure in Chicago is intensifying.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs achieved their first division title in a full NHL season in 25 years, defeated the Senators in the first “Battle of Ontario” playoff series since 2004, and pushed the defending Stanley Cup champions to seven games. Despite these accomplishments, the season was still considered a letdown by both the team and its fanbase.
Facing pressure in the off-season is standard for the Maple Leafs, who are striving to win their first Stanley Cup since 1967. However, this summer feels different. The organization has moved on from president Brendan Shanahan, and star forward Mitch Marner is approaching free agency — both were key figures in the team`s strategy over the last ten years. Adding to this, General Manager Brad Treliving has stated that the team`s “DNA needs to change.”
Whether this change involves acquiring players known for grit like Sam Bennett or Brad Marchand this off-season, or pursuing a completely different strategy, Treliving is entering his third summer as GM. The expectation is now to see his plan to help the team overcome its playoff struggles and compete for a championship, potentially by 2026.
