Greg Millen, Former NHL Goalie and Sports Broadcaster, Dies at 67

The hockey world mourns the loss of Greg Millen, a former NHL goaltender and respected broadcaster for Sportsnet, who passed away at the age of 67.

Millen had a distinguished 14-season NHL career as a goalie, playing in 604 games for six teams including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings.

In his NHL career, he started 582 games, achieving a goals-against average of 3.88 and a save percentage of .873.

Following his retirement from professional hockey in 1992, Millen successfully transitioned to broadcasting. He began covering the Ottawa Senators` inaugural season and later became a well-known color commentator for Hockey Night in Canada and NHL broadcasts on Sportsnet.

Throughout his broadcasting career, Millen covered major hockey events, including three Olympic Games, two World Cups of Hockey, twelve Stanley Cup Finals, and twelve NHL All-Star Games.

Born in Toronto, Millen was drafted by Pittsburgh in the sixth round of the 1977 NHL Draft after playing junior hockey with the Peterborough Petes, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, and Toronto Marlboros.

Sportsnet PR released a statement acknowledging Millen`s impact: `Greg made a lasting impression on hockey and everyone fortunate enough to know him, watch him, and listen to his commentary. His contagious enthusiasm for the sport, insightful analysis, and sharp humor made him a trusted and familiar voice for millions of Canadian viewers for over 30 years.`

The Calgary Flames also issued a statement: `Our condolences and thoughts are with Greg Millen`s family and friends on his passing. After a successful 14-year NHL career, Greg transitioned to broadcasting, and we were privileged to have him as part of our Flames Sportsnet family. Rest in peace, Millsy.`
