Guaguas Las Palmas has successfully advanced to the CEV Champions League Men’s Quarterfinals, securing their progression even after a narrow 3–2 defeat against Montpellier HSC VB. Their advancement was confirmed by winning the two necessary sets, building on their dominant 3–1 victory from the first leg.
Montpellier initiated the match with strong momentum, claiming the first set 25–22. However, Guaguas, galvanized by veteran star Osmany Juantorena, rallied in the second set to level the score. The French side then regained the lead with a dominant 25–19 win in the third set, putting the Spanish club under pressure to clinch the decisive fourth set for qualification.
Guaguas rose to the occasion in the fourth. Driven by Francisco Wallysson Bezerra Souza and Juantorena, the visitors navigated a tense finish to win 25–22, thereby securing their place in the quarterfinals—an achievement marking only the second time in the club’s history.
Despite qualification already being decided, Montpellier went on to win the tie-break 15–11, ultimately taking the match.
Individually, Wallysson and Montpellier’s opposite hitter Simon Hirsch shared the honors as top scorers, each recording 21 points. Guaguas’ setter, Miguel Ángel De Amo, was recognized as the MVP for his performance.
