Hughes, Makar Among Norris Trophy Finalists

Sportsnet`s Hockey Central panel discusses Cale Makar`s dominance over his six NHL seasons and how his statistics compare to the early career of Hall of Fame defenseman Paul Coffey.

Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes is a contender for his second straight Norris Trophy.

On Tuesday, Quinn Hughes, Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, and Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets were announced as the finalists for the Norris Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL`s best defenseman. The trophy recognizes the player who demonstrates the greatest all-round ability in the position and is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Hughes, who won the award last season, posted 16 goals and 76 points in just 68 games this year, marking his third straight season with at least 76 points.

Makar is a finalist for the fifth time in his six NHL seasons. He became only the ninth defenseman in league history to reach the 30-goal mark in a single season and finished first among all defensemen with 30 goals, 62 assists, and 92 points. This is his second straight season with at least 90 points.

Werenski is a first-time Norris finalist in his ninth NHL season. He achieved career-best numbers with 23 goals and 82 points, contributing to the Blue Jackets staying in playoff contention until the final days of the season.
