The Carolina Hurricanes have solidified their goaltending position for the upcoming season.
Veteran goaltender Frederik Andersen has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Hurricanes, the team announced. The deal is reportedly worth $2.75 million.
Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky commented on the signing in a team statement, saying, “Frederik has performed exceptionally well for us and is among the top 10 NHL goalies all-time in winning percentage. We are pleased that he will remain with the team for the next season.”
Andersen, who is 35 years old, played 22 games for the Hurricanes last season. He finished with a record of 13-8-1, a 2.50 goals against average, and a .899 save percentage.
Andersen`s 12-year NHL career began with the Anaheim Ducks. He then spent five seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before joining Carolina as a free agent in July 2021.
He missed 38 consecutive games during the season due to knee surgery he underwent in November.
The contract contains performance bonuses totalling up to $750,000. Andersen can earn $250,000 for playing 35 games, another $250,000 for playing 40 games, and a further $250,000 if the team reaches the conference finals and he plays at least half of their playoff games.
It is expected that Andersen will share goaltending duties with the 25-year-old Pyotr Kochetkov. Kochetkov had a strong 2023-24 season, finishing fourth in Calder Trophy voting and being named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.
