Recent Activity
Inter Miami, also known as The Herons, have resumed domestic play following their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. During the tournament, they made history by defeating European opponents like Porto and advancing to the round of 16, where they were eventually eliminated by Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain.
Current MLS Status
Lionel Messi has been scoring again since returning to MLS, netting two goals in a 4-1 victory against Montreal. Inter Miami is currently sixth in the Eastern Conference, trailing leaders Cincinnati by 10 points but holding four games in hand.
Mascherano`s Ambition
While Inter Miami achieved success in 2024 (specifically by setting a points record when lifting the Supporters’ Shield), the primary objective for this season is securing the MLS Cup. Coach Javier Mascherano stated: “Our current motivation is to compete strongly in the league and achieve the goal this club has pursued annually. We aim to go as far as possible, secure a playoff spot, ideally with home-field advantage, and then see what unfolds towards the end of October.”
Busy Schedule and Squad Management
Inter Miami faces a packed schedule in July, including the start of another Leagues Cup tournament. Coach Mascherano commented on managing the squad: “We clearly have many upcoming matches, in addition to those we`ve already played, so everyone will need to contribute. We will look at how we can manage roster rotations without significantly impacting performance, as I prefer not to make drastic changes of six or seven players between games.”
Future Prospects
Beyond the current season goals, Inter Miami hopes that Lionel Messi will soon provide another boost by activating the extension option in his contract for 2026. The Argentine legend is currently able to discuss potential moves with other interested clubs as his current deal in South Florida approaches its conclusion.
