Jakob Chychrun, who quickly became a vital offensive defenseman for the Washington Capitals in his debut season, has committed to the team long-term.

On Tuesday, Chychrun and the Capitals agreed to an eight-year contract extension valued at $72 million. This contract, carrying a $9 million annual salary cap hit, will keep the dynamic defenseman in Washington through the 2033 season.

General Manager Chris Patrick praised Chychrun as a “proven, dynamic defenseman” in his prime, highlighting his skills and versatility. Patrick emphasized Chychrun`s work ethic and ability to contribute in all game situations, making him a perfect fit for the Capitals` team culture and future aspirations. The organization is excited to have him for the next eight years.

This season, Chychrun has scored more goals (18) than all other Capitals defensemen combined, ranking third among NHL defensemen. His 43 points in 65 games represent a career high, demonstrating his significant offensive contribution.

Coach Spencer Carbery has experimented with using Chychrun on the top power play unit, noting his different style compared to John Carlson. Carbery described Chychrun as a mobile quarterback who uses his skating and wrist shot to create scoring opportunities.

Despite a minor wrist injury sustained in a recent game, Chychrun`s commitment to the Capitals` future remained a priority. Re-signing Chychrun was the final key item on General Manager Patrick`s agenda this season, following the contract extensions of goaltenders Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren.

Chychrun was initially acquired by Washington in a trade last off-season. Keeping him was seen as crucial for both the remainder of Alex Ovechkin`s era and the team`s next phase, incorporating promising prospects like Ryan Leonard.

With this extension, Chychrun is now the longest-signed player on the Capitals roster and will be the team`s second-highest-paid player next season, and top-paid in subsequent years.
