A significant comeback inherently brings some uncertainty. However, it`s abundantly clear that Jonathan Toews` return to the NHL is made even more special for everyone involved because it`s happening in Manitoba.
Speaking publicly for the first time since signing a one-year contract with the Winnipeg Jets on June 20, following a two-year hiatus from hockey, Toews was candid about the deeply personal nature of this development in his career.
He expressed genuine gratitude, stating, “I just feel truly blessed to be playing the game of hockey again at this caliber, especially for the Winnipeg Jets.”
It`s uncommon for a city mayor and provincial premier to both attend a welcoming event for a professional athlete. Yet, this reflects the intense hockey passion in this relatively smaller locale, which has transitioned from merely being proud of a native son`s achievements elsewhere to now actively cheering for him while he proudly wears his hometown team`s colors.
“I was joking earlier that I anticipated some excitement, I kind of expected that,” Toews remarked. “But when my phone started going crazy the way it did after we announced it, the reality truly hit me. I realized, okay, there`s considerable pressure playing in a Canadian market and high expectations, particularly given how the Jets have performed in recent years. I`m enthusiastic about being part of all that.”
