LONDON, Ont. — The trial involving five former NHL players facing accusations of a 2018 sexual assault is scheduled to continue before a jury on Friday.
Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia is presiding over the proceedings. Due to a publication ban, details regarding Thursday`s court session cannot be reported.
On Wednesday, Justice Carroccia informed the jury that an issue arose during the lunch break requiring her consideration and discussion with legal counsel, leading to the jury`s dismissal for the remainder of the day. Specifics of this issue were not shared with the jury.
Earlier on Wednesday, the prosecution presented its opening statement, outlining the anticipated evidence for the trial and indicating that the central issue would primarily concern consent.
Michael McLeod, aged 27, faces two counts of sexual assault, including one count related to being a party to the offense. Dillon Dube, 26, Cal Foote, 26, Alex Formenton, 25, and Carter Hart, 26, each face one charge of sexual assault. All five defendants have entered not guilty pleas.
The trial is estimated to last between five and eight weeks.
