Kirkland’s Comeback: From Speechless to Masterton Nominee

CALGARY — For an athlete four months into a nine-month knee surgery recovery, any positive news is highly valued.

When Justin Kirkland learned of his nomination as Calgary`s representative for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, his reaction was filled with emotion.

“Upon hearing the news, I was truly speechless,” shared the Calgary Flames center, referring to the award that celebrates a player`s perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

“Later, reflecting on my journey from two years ago to now, it`s incredible. I always had faith in myself, but reaching this point felt uncertain.”

“Being nominated for such an honor is incredibly meaningful and personally significant.”

Kirkland’s narrative became a symbol of resilience for Calgary this season. Called up early in the season, he capitalized on the opportunity by scoring his debut NHL goal, culminating an eight-season journey through various minor league teams.

At the time, he was 28 years old.
