Koror, Palau Venue Elevated to FIVB Beach Volleyball Centre of Excellence

The landscape of beach volleyball development in the Oceania region has received a significant official endorsement. The Koror Beach Volleyball Venue in Palau has been formally recognised as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).

This designation follows the signing of a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The signatories represent a broad coalition of sports and governmental bodies, including Koror State, the Oceania Zonal Volleyball Association (OZVA), the Palau National Olympic Committee (PNOC), the Palau Volleyball Federation (PVF), and the FIVB itself. The formal recognition of a sandy patch dedicated to a sport synonymous with casual beach life through such a structured agreement underscores the growing global commitment to beach volleyball.

The agreement was finalised during a recent visit by FIVB leadership to Palau, coinciding with preparations for the Pacific Mini Games. Key figures involved in the signing included the Governor of Koror State, the FIVB President, and the presidents of the PNOC, OZVA (also an FIVB Executive Vice-President), and PVF (also an FIVB Executive Vice-President). This initiative also received high-level support from the President of the Republic of Palau, indicating its national significance.

The primary function of the Koror venue as a CoE will be to serve as a regional hub focused on high-performance training. Its programs are intended to nurture the next generation of beach volleyball talent, specifically targeting the development of youth athletes and coaches across the various island nations of Oceania. This strategic focus aims to raise the overall standard of play and coaching expertise in the zone.

Beyond immediate training objectives, the centre is poised to contribute a lasting legacy to the Palau 2025 Pacific Mini Games, where beach volleyball will likely feature prominently. It is envisioned as more than just a training facility; it symbolises unity and a shared platform for knowledge exchange among participating nations, offering enhanced opportunities for aspiring players in the region.

This official recognition is considered a pivotal step in the ongoing evolution of beach volleyball infrastructure in Oceania. Establishing a dedicated regional training and development hub is expected to streamline talent identification and development pathways that were previously more fragmented.

Looking ahead, the signing of the MoU coincides with active discussions between the FIVB and its Palauan partners regarding the potential to host a future edition of an FIVB Age Group World Championship in Palau. Leveraging the newly recognised CoE status and the infrastructure supporting it positions Palau as a viable candidate for hosting international events, further elevating the profile of beach volleyball in the Pacific.
