Krueger’s Rise Continues with Miami Open Victory Over Fernandez

MIAMI — The Miami Open witnessed an outstanding performance on Saturday as American Ashlyn Krueger progressed further in the tournament, overcoming Leylah Fernandez.

Ashlyn Krueger has advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 7-5. Her next opponent will be decided in the match between No. 9 seed Zheng Qinwen and Taylor Townsend.

This result marks the 20-year-old American`s best achievement at a WTA 1000 event since Toronto last year. Krueger has now achieved seven victories against Top 30 players this season, surpassing her total from previous seasons. Only Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva, and Iga Swiatek have more such wins.

Krueger`s powerful shots were evident in the match against Fernandez. She maintained a strong serve, preventing any breaks, and her winner count is only surpassed by McCartney Kessler (84) and Hailey Baptiste (78), with Krueger totaling 69 winners.

To recap, Krueger has now defeated Renata Zarazua, No. 7 seed and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, and No. 26 seed Fernandez, a 2021 US Open finalist.

When asked if these victories feel like the new normal, Krueger responded, “Yes, every match I focus on my own game, not on my opponent`s past achievements. Winning is satisfying and shows that my off-court efforts are paying off.”

Regarding her potential next opponents, Krueger commented, “Taylor is a close friend and a versatile player, being a lefty adds another dimension. Both she and Qinwen, who has a strong serve and great overall game, are formidable competitors. The approach will differ depending on who I face.”

Krueger also celebrated a doubles win on Saturday, partnering with Jessica Pegula to defeat Anna Danilina and Irina Khromacheva 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. They are scheduled to play again on Sunday before Krueger’s singles match on Monday.
