RALEIGH, N.C. — Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson left Wednesday night`s game against the Carolina Hurricanes due to an upper-body injury, according to the team. Coach Spencer Carbery didn`t have much to say about Thompson`s condition after the Capitals` 5-1 defeat.
“He will be further evaluated when the team returns to Washington,” Carbery stated.
Charlie Lindgren replaced Thompson in goal at the start of the second period. Thompson had allowed three goals on 12 shots in the first period. The moment and manner of Thompson`s injury were not immediately apparent.
Thompson, 28, is potentially a contender for the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the NHL`s best goalie. He has had a successful first season with Washington, winning 31 of his initial 42 games. He was recently rewarded with a six-year, $35.1 million contract extension in late January.
Lindgren played his second game in two nights, having led the Eastern Conference-leading Capitals to a win against Boston on Tuesday. After taking over for Thompson against the Hurricanes, Lindgren conceded two goals from 19 shots.
