Maple Leafs mailbag: Could Marchand or McDavid come to Toronto?

It all comes down to the questions, folks. Yes, we`re talking about the questions!

The Toronto Maple Leafs once again left their fanbase feeling frustrated and disappointed after their Game 7 loss. However, their elimination has also sparked significant curiosity regarding potential free-agent targets, the future of promising prospects turning pro, and the imaginative possibility of superstar Connor McDavid returning to his home province of Ontario in the coming years.

So, let`s open up the mailbag and examine some of the prevalent topics currently circulating among the minds of Leafs Nation during this early stage of the off-season.

As always, thank you for reading and submitting your questions.

Question: Is there any chance the Leafs could acquire Brad Marchand via free agency? He appears to be precisely the kind of player they need to improve their team culture, and he grew up supporting the Leafs. Do you have any indication if he might consider signing here, or is he more likely to stay with Florida or Boston? — Via @coltonwarthurs

While technically anything is possible, Colton, this particular scenario seems highly unlikely.

It`s undeniable that the Maple Leafs could use more passionate individuals on the roster, and Marchand`s unique combination of competitive fire on the ice and laid-back demeanor off it would indeed be a valuable cultural asset. He clearly thrives in high-pressure situations, whether representing Boston or Team Canada.

Furthermore, Marchand would capably fill the persistent void at second-line left wing, a position that saw various players like Pontus Holmberg, Bobby McMann, and Max Pacioretty tried out without anyone consistently excelling.

Marchand is effective on the penalty kill, makes quick, intelligent plays on the power play, and provides significant offensive punch. (His 51 points during the 2024-25 season placed him ninth among players approaching unrestricted free agency.)

He is widely recognized as a leader and an exceptional teammate.

He`s engaging to interview and demonstrates sharp hockey sense.

Importantly, at the age of 37, he is also seeking a substantial contract.
