Mirra Andreeva defeats Frech; into Madrid last 16 for third straight year

Seventh seed Mirra Andreeva needed her best patient game to fend off the challenge from Magdalena Frech, ultimately winning 7-5, 6-3. This victory propels her into the Mutua Madrid Open`s last 16 for the third consecutive year.

Andreeva boasts an impressive record in Madrid, having never been eliminated before the fourth round. As a 15-year-old wildcard ranked No. 312 in 2023, she made headlines by reaching this stage during only her second WTA main draw appearance. The following year, she went even further, reaching her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. Continuing this strong performance in 2025, Andreeva secured her passage with a second career win against the 27th-ranked Frech.

Much like their previous meeting at the Australian Open, which Andreeva won 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, this match proved to be a tough contest that tested the 17-year-old`s ability to stay composed. At moments, especially in the first set, Andreeva showed visible frustration with Frech`s persistent defense and retrieving skills. However, she successfully managed to overcome these setbacks quickly, securing the win in 1 hour and 41 minutes.

“I was very, very nervous,” Andreeva admitted during her on-court interview. “I still struggle to find my best tennis in Madrid. [But I`m] super happy that I could manage to play consistent throughout the whole match.”

In the upcoming fourth round, Andreeva is scheduled to face either the 18th seed Liudmila Samsonova or qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva.
