Edmonton Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman acknowledges the approaching timeline regarding superstar Connor McDavid`s contract situation.
Starting July 1, the Oilers are eligible to sign McDavid to a contract extension. He currently has one year left on his deal before becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Bowman stated that extending McDavid, a three-time Hart Trophy winner, is the team`s top priority, but they will respect his timing.
During his media availability Friday, Bowman explained, “We`re certainly eager to meet with him whenever he wants, but we understand he`s coming off a very tough season ending.” He emphasized, “Timing-wise, Connor`s going to drive that process.”
Bowman highlighted McDavid`s importance beyond his on-ice performance, adding, “He`s a pivotal player… not just what he does on the ice, but his leadership… I`ve been just so impressed with how… he is… as a teammate… he`s incredibly important to our group, and… whenever he`s ready, we`re going to dive into that.”
