The Edmonton Oilers are demonstrating remarkable resilience in these Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Their performance in the third period has been particularly noteworthy, leading to a historic achievement. Following their rally from a two-goal deficit to secure a 4-2 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 on Tuesday, the Oilers became the first team in the history of the NHL to achieve five consecutive come-from-behind wins in a single postseason.
This success is largely attributed to their effectiveness in the final 20 minutes of regulation and overtime. According to statistics, the Oilers have significantly outscored their opponents 18-6 in the third period and overtime during this playoff run. Notably, three of their four goals in Tuesday`s game were scored during the third period.
The impressive streak began in Game 3 of their first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers were trailing 3-1 but managed to tie the game with two goals from Evan Bouchard, including a crucial equalizer in the final minute. Leon Draisaitl then netted the overtime winner to complete that comeback.
In the subsequent three games of that series, the Kings opened the scoring each time. However, the persistent Oilers consistently battled back, ultimately winning the series in six games.
Their capability for rallies isn`t limited to the playoffs; in the 2024-25 regular season, the Oilers recorded 19 come-from-behind victories. Six of these involved overcoming a deficit in the third period, placing them in a tie for 11th across the NHL.
