Brad Marchand found himself in unfamiliar circumstances.

The captain of the Boston Bruins was approaching unrestricted free agency while his team was underperforming significantly.

This situation caused him considerable stress.

“These were situations I hadn`t truly experienced before… I wouldn`t say I handled them well,” Marchand commented on Tuesday. “I allowed the business aspect of it to get to me.”

The experienced forward from Halifax couldn`t finalize a new contract with the Bruins, the only NHL team he had ever played for. Consequently, he was eventually traded to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, an Atlantic Division powerhouse bolstering their roster for another championship bid.

The transition appears to have been seamless.

Marchand, a Stanley Cup winner with Boston in 2011 and a finalist in 2013 and 2019, is now in the NHL`s championship series wearing different colors.

However, the player`s core style remains largely unchanged.

Though he`s reportedly toned down his more controversial antics with age and maturity, the 37-year-old is still an agitating presence for opponents. His new team, the Florida Panthers, are set to face the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive June (Game 1 is Wednesday at Rogers Place). The Panthers are the reigning champions, having won a tough seven-game series against the Oilers approximately 11 and a half months prior.

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov, whose team defeated Marchand`s Bruins in both the 2023 and 2024 playoffs, smiled as he commented during his NHL media day appearance, “I learned he`s a good guy. Playing against him… you`d definitely rather have him on your side than opposing him. He`s added significant experience to our roster.”

Florida winger Matthew Tkachuk said Marchand`s arrival in the locker room was ideal.

“He`s the perfect Panther,” Tkachuk stated. “He`s built for our team… he was incredibly difficult to play against. We faced off many times before, but I still believe his full skill set isn`t always apparent.”

He added, “He`s such a dedicated worker and a truly outstanding teammate.”
