Paul Mullin Shares Disappointment Over Wrexham Departure to Wigan

Paul Mullin became one of the initial key signings for Wrexham under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. He established himself as a club icon, netting 110 goals and earning the Player of the Year award three times.

He was instrumental in Phil Parkinson`s team securing three consecutive promotions, making history in the English Football League. However, during the 2024-25 season, his opportunities for game time diminished, causing him to fall lower in the squad hierarchy.

The 30-year-old striker has now completed a loan switch to League One side Wigan Athletic. Speaking to Wigan`s official media channels, Mullin explained his motivation for initially joining Wrexham and his feelings about leaving the club where he achieved so much:

“I made that move first and foremost for family reasons, it was something that was going to be close to home and something that was going to be exciting every day. At that point I never thought it would go on to become what it`s become. It`s been absolutely phenomenal.”

He expressed his sadness regarding the nature of his departure:

“It was sad to leave there how it’s ended, in a way, that happens in football, you leave clubs. Just the way it’s gone it has been quite disappointing, but they say as one door closes another one opens and I’m ready for a new chapter. I’m buzzing to be here and to go out every week and play for Wigan.”

Mullin`s profile significantly increased after featuring prominently in the `Welcome to Wrexham` documentary series and playing under A-list owners. He reflected on the unexpected level of attention:

“It’s been quite hard and strange at times. When we were playing in the National League, because of who the owners are and the attention we had because of the documentary and things, I ended up getting a lot more attention than players who are in the Premier League and a lot better at football than me.”

He added that he took the increased fame in his stride:

“That was quite strange to accept but I’m one of those people that just get on with it and be myself. I found it quite funny. It’s an absolute privilege that anybody would ever stop me in the street to speak to me or take a photo.”

Having been a firm fan favorite at Wrexham, Mullin is now focused on quickly establishing a connection with the supporters at Wigan. His move is a season-long loan, and he still has two years remaining on his contract with the Welsh club.
