TORONTO — Ontario Premier Doug Ford has voiced his support for a Canadian team to clinch the Stanley Cup, with a clear preference for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Maple Leafs are gearing up to compete against the Ottawa Senators in the playoffs, marking their first playoff encounter in over two decades.

While the Senators are returning to the post-season after a hiatus since 2017, the Leafs have been consistent playoff contenders in recent years, though their success has been limited to a single playoff series win.

Premier Ford, a long-time resident of Etobicoke, a Toronto suburb, has been a dedicated Leafs fan since his childhood.

The Montreal Canadiens were the last Canadian team to hoist the Stanley Cup, achieving this feat in 1993 against Wayne Gretzky`s Los Angeles Kings.

When questioned about the upcoming series and whether the Senators might sweep the Leafs, Ford opted for a diplomatic approach.

`Someone suggested I wear a split jersey, you know, half Senators and half Leafs, but I`m just hoping for an exciting series,` Ford commented.

`It`s no secret I`ve always cheered for the Leafs, but ultimately, my wish is to see a Canadian team win the Stanley Cup.`

The best-of-seven series is scheduled to commence on Sunday.

`I`m eagerly anticipating Sunday and may the best team emerge victorious,` Ford stated with enthusiasm.

`Go Leafs go! Excuse me, that just came out.`
