The New York Rangers have signed General Manager Chris Drury to a multi-year contract extension. This agreement keeps him leading hockey operations despite the team underperforming this past season and missing the playoffs.
Owner James Dolan announced the extension just days after Drury dismissed head coach Peter Laviolette. When questioned about his own job security following the coaching change, Drury declined to disclose details of his discussions with Dolan.
In a statement, Dolan praised Drury`s contributions: “Over his tenure, Chris has shown passion for the Rangers, relentless work ethic, and a tireless pursuit of excellence. While we are all disappointed in what transpired this past season, I am confident in his ability to guide this organization to success.”
Expectations were high for the Rangers this season after their previous run to the Eastern Conference Final. However, the team struggled, facing challenges like off-ice issues involving captain Jacob Trouba before his trade to Anaheim in December.
Drury assumed the role of GM and president of hockey operations in 2021 following owner James Dolan`s sudden dismissal of John Davidson and Jeff Gorton. Drury, a former Rangers captain, was tasked with accelerating the team`s rebuild. Under his leadership, the Rangers made the playoffs in his first three seasons, advancing through four series.
Drury commented on the extension, stating, “I am honored to sign this contract extension and continue in this position with the team I grew up supporting. As I said when I began in this role nearly four years ago, there isn’t a more special organization in hockey and I look forward to continuing our work this offseason to help us reach our goals for next season and in the coming years.”
Looking ahead, the 48-year-old faces significant tasks, including hiring a new coach and making roster adjustments to address the team`s shortcomings. This past season, the Rangers finished six points shy of a playoff spot in the East.
