Following a mixed performance in Australia, McLaren appears to have found its rhythm. Lando Norris achieved a strong P3, complemented by teammate Oscar Piastri’s P5 finish. Although there’s still work ahead for the Woking-based squad, today’s impressive laps should inject a much-needed boost of positivity into the team.
Hope for Ferrari
Despite not clinching a front-row start, Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc secured solid P4 and P6 positions for the sprint, marking a commendable outing for the Scuderia. Initially only a few tenths shy of Russell’s pace in SQ1, the gap to Mercedes widened through SQ2 and SQ3, preventing the Prancing Horse from challenging the Silver Arrows for pole.
Red Bull Faces Challenges
Red Bull faced a challenging start to the weekend, appearing to lack outright pace. Max Verstappen managed only P8 in qualifying, with teammate Isack Hadjar trailing in P10. Verstappen expressed his frustration over the radio during SQ1, describing the gear shifts as “terrible,” indicating his dissatisfaction with the current car setup.
The Rest of the Grid
Cadillac continued its search for optimal performance, enduring a disappointing qualifying session. The team hopes for improvements as the weekend progresses, with Valtteri Bottas qualifying P21. Sergio Pérez did not participate due to fuel system issues with his car. Aston Martin’s struggles from Australia seemed to persist, as Fernando Alonso qualified P19 and Lance Stroll P20. Haas driver Oliver Bearman delivered an impressive performance, splitting the two Red Bulls to qualify P8. Having finished P8 in last year’s Grand Prix, Bearman aims to replicate that success this weekend. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly secured P7 but is under investigation for potentially impeding Max Verstappen.
