Santos Director Reveals ‘Huge Amount of Clubs’ Pursued Neymar Before Contract Extension

What Happened?

After returning to his original club, Santos, following injury problems that led to the termination of his contract with Saudi Pro League team Al-Hilal, Neymar has committed to staying until the end of 2025.

The Bigger Picture

While he might seek a change of scene closer to the 2026 World Cup, Neymar is presently content at Santos. This remains true despite his father confirming that clubs competing in the Champions League had approached the Brazilian international.

What Santos Chief Said

Santos chief Alexandre Mattos expressed his pleasure, stating: “It`s a pleasure and honor to work with him. I`ve known the family for a long time and stayed in touch before arriving. I`ve seen Neymar`s deep love for this club. His desire to help and contribute to Santos is remarkable. From a market perspective, following this renewal, I received messages from directors and CEOs globally who wished to sign Neymar. A huge number of clubs wanted him, but he declined. The dedication I see from the club`s staff and the Neymar family – often unfairly criticized – their love for Santos will help restore the club`s standing.”

Did You Know?

Mattos continued about Neymar`s commitment: “Neymar creates expectations in every situation. Looking at it calmly, things are unfolding as anticipated. This includes the physical adaptation process and occasional injuries after being out for eighteen months without playing. Physically, this is generally what was expected.”

“He is a genius and has shown great dedication. While some focus on controversy, he is committed to being here. I spoke with him recently, and he is eager to play consistently. With regular play, he will be the decisive Neymar, one of the world`s best. This is undoubtedly crucial for Santos and our squad. He is genuinely motivated, and I am confident he will succeed. His significance lies in all that he contributes to the club.”

What Next for Neymar?

Neymar, the former forward for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil`s record goalscorer, is currently on a break from Santos` league matches during the FIFA Club World Cup. This time off has allowed him to spend time with his partner Bruna Biancardi and Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal.
