The WTA announced on Wednesday that São Paulo, Brazil, is set to host a tournament in September, bringing the Hologic WTA Tour back to the city after a quarter-century absence. The new WTA 250 SP Open is scheduled for the week of September 8, stepping in to replace the Jasmin Open previously held in Monastir. This event will feature a 32-player draw for singles competition and a 16-team draw for doubles, contested on outdoor hard courts.
This upcoming tournament marks the first time a WTA event will be held in São Paulo since the Brasil Open in 2000. That year, Hungary`s Rita Kuti-Kis claimed the singles title, while the Argentine duo of Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez won the doubles championship.
The news of São Paulo`s return to the Hologic WTA Tour comes amidst an exciting start to the 2025 season. So far, 15 different players have won singles titles across the various WTA 250, 500, and 1000 level events. A notable highlight includes Mirra Andreeva`s historic achievement as the youngest-ever champion of a WTA 1000 tournament.
This early-season drama, coupled with the recent launch of the WTA`s distinct new brand identity, has significantly boosted the tour`s presence on social media. By the end of March, WTA followers had increased by 25% compared to the previous year, and total video views in the first quarter saw a substantial 163% rise.
