Playoff series often hinge on the slightest margins.
The Ottawa Senators painfully learned this lesson on Tuesday evening, as they fell 3-2 in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs and now face a 2-0 deficit in their opening-round series.
Coach Travis Green commented, “We likely deserved a better outcome tonight, but that`s simply how playoff hockey works.”
The game started with familiar concerns for Ottawa, as the Maple Leafs quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead within the initial ten minutes. However, the Senators showed commendable resilience, battling back to force the game into overtime after significantly outplaying Toronto for large portions of the contest.
Addressing the 2-0 series hole, captain Brady Tkachuk stated, “There is absolutely no panic or doubt among the players in this room.”
While team confidence remains, the Senators clearly exhibit certain vulnerabilities in their gameplay that require immediate attention as the series relocates to their home arena.
Despite generating more shots and scoring opportunities than the Maple Leafs, Ottawa`s Game 2 loss was ultimately determined by crucial errors committed by two important players, Drake Batherson and Thomas Chabot. Their performances in this series thus far have been marked by more detrimental moments than positive ones.
Heading into the season, both Chabot and Batherson were recognized more for their offensive capabilities than their defensive prowess, though they had reportedly improved defensively during the year. Unfortunately, these defensive strides appear to be absent in the playoffs, as their costly plays directly contributed to the Maple Leafs` first goal for the second game in a row.
