Nick Jensen, who recently helped the Ottawa Senators reach the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2018, is dealing with lingering effects from the past season.
Speaking at the team`s yearly charity golf event on Friday, General Manager Steve Staios confirmed earlier reports that the defenseman had undergone hip surgery.
Last season, Jensen played in 71 regular-season games for the Senators, recording 21 points (three goals, 18 assists) and achieving a plus-18 rating.
Staios did not provide specific details about the injury or the surgery but stated that there is currently no set timeline for his recovery.
A report from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen indicates that Jensen explored his options and decided surgery was the most suitable course of action.
The 34-year-old was a consistent presence on the Senators` roster during the 2024-25 season. He ranked eighth on the team in both total and average ice time (20:13) and was fifth in blocked shots (95).
Despite appearing to be affected by the injury during the playoffs, Jensen participated in all six games of the Senators` first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He finished fifth in average ice time (20:56) and eighth in blocked shots (4) in the series, though he did not register any points.
“Nick is a true warrior,” Staios commented last month during the team`s season-ending media availability. “His ability to maintain his performance level while playing through that injury speaks volumes about his character.”
