Simon Wang`s hockey path has led him to the San Jose Sharks organization.
The defenseman, born in Beijing, was chosen by the Sharks as the 33rd overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft held on Saturday in Los Angeles.
At 17 years old, Wang spent his formative years in China before relocating to Toronto at age 12 to further his aspirations in hockey. His selection marks a significant milestone, as he is the third player born in China to ever be drafted into the NHL.
Standing six-foot-five and weighing 215 pounds, the young blueliner first took to the ice at age four and quickly developed a passion for the sport.
Despite registering only two assists in 32 games for the OHL`s Oshawa Generals last season, scouts are particularly impressed by his rare combination of size and skating ability.
Reflecting on his prospects at the NHL Scouting Combine in June, Wang stated, “I recognize I may still be behind many players in this draft class, but my potential – what I have the capacity to become as a player – that`s where my true excitement lies.”
Sportsnet analyst Jason Bukala previously ranked Wang as the 64th overall prospect, projecting him as a future bottom-pairing defenseman.
Bukala commented, “He will require time to develop, but he possesses a foundational skill set that is appealing at this point in the draft.”
