Stars take series lead off controversial Game 3 winner vs. Jets

2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs

DALLAS — Mikko Rantanen recorded a goal and two assists, one of which was on the decisive goal deflected in off defenseman Alexander Petrovic`s skate. This goal was ultimately confirmed after a lengthy video review, helping the Dallas Stars defeat the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 on Sunday and take a 2-1 lead in the second-round Western Conference series.

Officials spent well over five minutes reviewing Petrovic`s goal after the NHL`s situation room initiated a video check to determine if he had kicked the puck into the net for the 3-2 lead with 16:09 remaining. The final decision concluded that replays supported the referee`s original call on the ice, which indicated that goalie Connor Hellebuyck had caused the puck to go into his own net.

“At that point, you want them to take as much time as they need to get it right,” stated Stars coach Pete DeBoer, adding that the explanation he received was that Hellebuyck was attempting to make a play on the puck.

Jets coach Scott Arniel, however, clearly did not agree with the ruling.
