Swiatek clears the air: Wimbledon is still on the calendar

Following her significant loss in the Madrid semifinal to Coco Gauff last week (6-1, 6-1), Iga Swiatek admitted to feeling upset. However, she clarified on Tuesday that the extensive speculation on social media was wildly inaccurate. Swiatek firmly stated she never seriously considered canceling her grass-court season.

Speaking at the Internazionali d’Italia, Swiatek told reporters, “Over the past few days, I`ve seen millions of comments that weren`t true. There are so many theories circulating right now, especially in Polish media, about me that are simply not true.”

As a four-time Roland Garros champion and the current World No. 2, Swiatek acknowledges her prominent public profile.

Swiatek commented, “You guys [journalists] like to create articles that will attract people – I understand that. It`s part of the profession.”

“But yes, I am certainly not going to skip Wimbledon,” Swiatek confirmed. “I genuinely want to improve my game on grass. Each year presents a new opportunity. I will definitely play Wimbledon, barring any injury.”

Swiatek`s professional record at Wimbledon (11 wins, 5 losses, .688 win percentage) is less impressive compared to her performances at the other three Grand Slams: Roland Garros (35-2, .946), the US Open (20-5, .800), and the Australian Open (22-7, .759). Ironically, her only junior singles Grand Slam title came at Wimbledon in 2018.
