Takeaways: Devils’ banged-up blue line steps up in double-OT win

It`s been a challenging season for Simon Nemec. The second-year defenseman faced difficulties throughout the 2024-25 campaign and began the playoffs as a healthy scratch. However, on Friday night, with his New Jersey Devils team trailing by two games in the series and dealing with several injured defensemen, Nemec rose to the occasion.

Nemec, at just 21 years old, is the youngest player on New Jersey`s roster and currently one of the few healthy blueliners available. He brought an end to the season`s longest game to date with a spectacular individual effort early in double overtime. His impressive rush culminated in a snapshot that found its way under the arm of Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen, sealing the victory.

This 3-2 double-overtime win against the surging Carolina Hurricanes reduces the series deficit to 2-1 and provides a much-needed spark for the Devils. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom was also crucial, making 25 saves.

Devils fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief (or maybe that was a tired yawn after a long game). Regardless, they can sleep easier tonight knowing the team is not on the verge of elimination. This crucial win has certainly made the series considerably more interesting.
