Tom Werner Sheds Light on Choosing Arne Slot for Liverpool

Context of Klopp`s Departure

Liverpool needed a new head coach after their legendary manager Jürgen Klopp announced his decision to step down in the summer of 2024, opting to leave before his contract expired.

The Decision to Hire Slot

Instead of pursuing a manager with a bigger global reputation, Liverpool decided to appoint Dutch coach Arne Slot, who had spent the previous three years in charge at Eredivisie club Feyenoord.

Chairman Werner`s Explanation

In an interview with The Times, Liverpool chairman Tom Werner discussed the significant managerial decisions made by the club. He praised FSG president Mike Gordon and chief executive Billy Hogan for their valuable input. Werner acknowledged some early missteps but highlighted the transformative impact of hiring Jürgen Klopp in 2015.

He added that when Klopp chose to depart, the club was fully confident in his decision being right for both him and Liverpool in the long term. Arne Slot emerged as the top candidate based on the extensive research conducted by sporting director Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards. Werner admitted that Slot “wasn’t an obvious first choice,” but emphasized the principle that surrounding yourself with talented individuals leads to success.

Liverpool`s Global Influence

Werner also spoke about the growing global reach of the Liverpool brand, estimating the worldwide fanbase might be approaching one billion people. He asserted that Liverpool possesses the strongest global presence among Premier League clubs, citing figures like over 500 million television views and 1.7 billion social media engagements in a recent period. He observed that many people, particularly in America, still underestimate the immense global power of football. Werner also reflected on the deep, emotional bond with the supporters, which is particularly palpable at Anfield during the singing of “You`ll Never Walk Alone.”
