Matthew Schaefer, a highly-regarded prospect expected to be selected early in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, is currently in Buffalo for the annual NHL Scouting Combine. While participating in the evaluation process, Schaefer also dedicated time to contribute positively to the local community.
He took a break from his combine schedule to visit individuals at the Western New York Compassion Connection. This facility provides assistance to people dealing with difficult life circumstances and personal challenges, situations that Schaefer himself has faced.
Schaefer has endured significant personal loss recently, including the death of his mother, Jennifer, from breast cancer in February 2024, following the earlier passing of his billet mother. He emphasized the importance of talking about his mother and his strong desire to help others, stating he believes his mother would be proud of his efforts.
The Erie Otters defenceman navigated further difficulties throughout the past season. The team`s owner unexpectedly passed away in December, and Schaefer`s season was cut short by a collarbone injury sustained while playing for Canada at the World Junior Championship.
Gwen Mysiak, the Executive Director of Western New York Compassion Connection, commented on the significance of Schaefer`s visit. She highlighted how meaningful it was for him to spend time with young people at the facility, especially those who have recently lost a parent, calling it a moment they would not forget.
Schaefer expressed his admiration for the work being done at the facility and shared his intention to revisit Western New York Compassion Connection in the future when his hockey career brings him back to Buffalo.
