Top seed Pegula, three more Americans reach Charleston third round

Four more American tennis players advanced to the Round of 16 at the Credit One Charleston Open on Wednesday, continuing the strong performance of home favorites that began on Tuesday.

Leading the charge were No. 1 seed Jessica Pegula and No. 4 seed Emma Navarro, who both delivered convincing victories in their opening matches of the clay-court season, each conceding only a handful of games.

Pegula, arriving in Charleston fresh from her runner-up finish at the Miami Open against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, maintained her momentum with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory over qualifier Iryna Shymanovich. Navarro, playing in her hometown of Charleston, also delighted the crowd with a 6-4, 6-3 win against fellow American Hailey Baptiste in one of two all-American matchups of the day.

Joining them in the next round are No. 15 seed Ashlyn Krueger and unseeded Sofia Kenin, both securing straight-set wins. Krueger, the reigning Charleston doubles champion with Sloane Stephens, defeated Katie Volynets 6-3, 7-6(4) in another all-American contest. Kenin delivered a notable upset, decisively defeating No. 17 seed Belinda Bencic with a score of 6-0, 6-3.
