Swedish defenceman Tom Willander is taking the next step in his career, preparing to transition to professional hockey.
The Vancouver Canucks announced Wednesday they have reached an agreement with Willander on a three-year entry-level contract. The deal is set to commence next season.
Willander, a 20-year-old blueliner, recently completed his second season with the Boston University Terriers. During his 39 games this past year, he recorded two goals and 24 points. Over his entire two-season tenure playing for the Terriers, he accumulated a total of 49 points across 77 appearances.
Vancouver originally selected Willander 11th overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin shared his thoughts on the signing in an official statement: “We are thrilled to have Tom under contract and anticipate him starting his professional hockey journey with us,” Allvin said. “Our team has followed his progress closely over the past couple of seasons and is very impressed with his development and growth in the NCAA. This is the opportune time for him to make the jump and integrate into our organization. The dedicated effort begins this summer, and we are eager to evaluate where Tom stands when training camp opens in September.”
