Let`s cut to the chase. You already know the stakes. Here’s my breakdown of which Western Conference teams have the edge as they enter the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Colorado vs Dallas

Season series: Colorado won 2-1 against Dallas, with the Stars securing three points, including an overtime loss in their final March encounter.

Analysis: We`re looking at two strong contenders, or at least, that`s the general perception. The Dallas Stars are currently on a six-game losing streak as they approach their game against Nashville. However, they previously enjoyed a seven-game win streak. It`s a reminder that teams are never as invincible in victory or as hopeless in defeat as they might seem.

Both teams are high-scoring, ranking among the top six in the league. Dallas has shown a slightly better defensive game, largely attributed to their second-best team save percentage in the league (.907), while Colorado ranks 18th (.891).

Based on expected goals for and against, Colorado appears slightly stronger, although both teams are statistically favored. Other teams in this numerically strong group include Vegas, Tampa Bay, Edmonton, Carolina, and Washington on the periphery.

A key factor will be goaltending performance, as Colorado`s goalies have improved since the season`s start, but Dallas`s goalies are currently struggling.

Player health is another critical aspect. Dallas is waiting for the return of Miro Heiskanen and Tyler Seguin, who is reportedly nearing his return, along with several day-to-day players. Colorado anticipates the return of Gabriel Landeskog and is awaiting updates on Josh Manson.

Prediction: Colorado in 6 games

Considering Colorado`s significant roster changes and Dallas`s current struggles, particularly in goaltending, Colorado seems poised to advance.

Edmonton vs Los Angeles

Season series: The Kings had a 3-0-1 record against Edmonton, but these results are somewhat misleading. In their last game, Edmonton missed key players, making that game less indicative of their true matchup strength.

Analysis: This series is intriguing due to contrasting styles. Los Angeles is among the NHL`s top defensive teams, ranking second in goals allowed per game, while Edmonton is 16th. Los Angeles`s defense is bolstered by Darcy Kuemper`s outstanding season, potentially earning him a Vezina nomination.

While their actual offensive output is comparable, Edmonton generates significantly more expected goals. When at full strength, especially with their top players available, Edmonton`s offense is incredibly challenging to defend against.

A potential weakness for the Kings is their power play, which ranks 28th in the league. If they struggle to score on power plays in what`s expected to be a physical series, it could embolden Edmonton to play more aggressively. The potential return of players like Evander Kane or Trent Frederic could be a significant boost for Edmonton.

However, Edmonton`s injury situation is a real concern. While they may be the superior team when healthy, players returning at less than 100 percent, especially after time off, might struggle to perform at their peak.

Prediction: Edmonton in 6 games

Ultimately, my hockey philosophy leans towards elite talent making the difference in crucial moments. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are game-changing playoff performers, and betting against them feels unwise. Expect close games where their ability to seize key moments will be decisive.
