For young NHL players like Macklin Celebrini, transitioning to the professional league can be overwhelming. Beyond the pressures on the ice, finding a stable living situation is crucial. Celebrini, drafted by the San Jose Sharks, found an ideal arrangement by living with hockey legend Joe Thornton.

Celebrini emphasizes Thornton`s positive influence, noting his constant energy and joyful attitude. This mentorship extends beyond just housing; it`s about guiding young players through the unwritten rules of the NHL, both on and off the ice.

Living with veterans isn`t a new concept. Connor McDavid, for example, lived with teammates during his rookie season, highlighting the importance of veteran guidance for young players entering a league where many peers are already established adults with families.

Sidney Crosby also benefited from veteran mentorship, living with Mario Lemieux during his initial years, which he greatly appreciated. Currently, Will Smith of the Sharks is following a similar path, residing with Patrick Marleau.

Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues experienced similar benefits living with Keith Tkachuk`s family, learning valuable life skills and gaining a deeper understanding of the game from a seasoned professional.

While some players like Bo Horvat prefer independence, many recognize the immense value of living with veterans. Wyatt Johnston of the Dallas Stars, who lived with Joe Pavelski, considers it the “best decision” for his development.

Celebrini himself acknowledges that living with Thornton was ideal, especially given the commute to the Sharks` rink from his family home. The experience underscores the significant advantages for young NHL players who choose to live with veteran mentors, easing their transition into professional hockey and life.
