Why Stars’ Game 3 winner vs. Jets counted after kicking review

Winnipeg Jets fans might feel understandably disappointed with the decisive goal in Game 3.

The Dallas Stars took the lead in the third period via a goal credited to Alexander Petrovic, a play that immediately sparked controversy and debate over whether it should have been allowed.

Petrovic`s goal occurred just four minutes into the final frame. The defenseman drove towards the net and appeared to use his foot to direct the puck near the goal line in the direction of the Winnipeg net.

The officials on the ice initially called it a goal, but the play was subjected to an extensive review by the league`s situation room.

After a considerable delay for review, the call on the ice was upheld. The determination was reportedly based on the absence of a distinct kicking motion by Petrovic and the fact that the puck may have ultimately deflected off Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck before entering the net. This ruling stood as the game-winning tally.
